      <image:title>About - About the poet</image:title>
<image:caption>After a lifetime as a heart surgeon, I looked for life beyond surgery, and found it in the form of writing poetry. Along the way I have pursued success in business, along with a very earnest attempt at being a family man. I can sum it all in this little quote: “I love my profession, as it allows me to save lives. I love my business, as it allows me to build lives. I love my family, as they allow me to live a life. I love writing poetry, as it allows me to feel life.” As a surgeon, I appreciate the importance of the heart’s steady rhythm as a protector of life. Similarly, I find rhyming a pivotal component of poetic expression. The emotions in my poems are the sound bytes from my mind and the world around me, expressed in a deeply personal and unedited way. Many of the thoughts are my own, but some are borrowed from various people and I have tried to identify those to the best of my ability. I hope you enjoy my work and find some lines that can help you feel life in a different way. Don’t forget to stay in touch as there is more to come! This picture is from 1980, when I was a surgical resident at S.U.N.Y. in Syracuse, New York.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Poems - My Surgeon's Hand - "My Heart"</image:title>
<image:caption>This poem is an expression of what I felt before undergoing my own major surgery in 2018. I have performed over 4,000 operations during my career, including performing open heart surgery on my own father. But this was my sole experience going under the knife, as the patient. This image is a painting by Laverne Ross, an artist in Flint, Michigan. He painted this after I did his heart surgery over a decade ago. It represents the intertwining and integration of the physical chambers and blood vessels needed to stay alive, much like the emotions and love that we bring together to make a happy life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Poems - Pursue The World - SOAR</image:title>
<image:caption>This poem was read on June 19, 2015 at the wedding reception of the poet’s second daughter Anisha. This poem has a special meaning in the heart of the poet as it got him started on the journey of expressing his feelings through the medium of poetry. It expresses the transformation of his daughter from an innocent child to a daring woman ready to take on the world.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Poems - Steadfast - AFFECT</image:title>
<image:caption>"Questions make me think, thinkers make me question" I was asked a question by my son, who is a doctorate of philosophy, about why, in the last few years, I have become more accommodating, calm and friendly. I could not answer him then, but after reflection I think I began to change my mindset after he started to ask and debate what makes life worthy. This poem is in recognition of his role in my evolution.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Poems - Dusri Kahani - RELEVANCE</image:title>
<image:caption>This poem was written during an especially sad moment when, becoming a senior citizen, I suddenly realized that my age will soon make me irrelevant both in my profession and in life. To retire from being a surgeon will mean loosing my identity, and there is nothing worse than being idle for an active mind. This poem starts with the contemplation of that feeling of irrelevance…followed by introspection of what is the worth of all that I have strived for…and finally finding the courage to start something new, despite old age looking me in the face.</image:caption>
